Myles Haupt: Achieving Balance in Academics, Sports, and Leadership
It’s important to view failures as opportunities for growth. Teachers should provide specific feedback rather than general criticisms to help students improve. Also, never underestimate the impact of lockdown on students’ social and academic development. We need to be kind to ourselves and others as we navigate these challenges. I am grateful to be in a space that supports my growth in all areas.
It was a privilege to interview Myles Haupt, a Grade 10 Education Incorporated student whose dedication and balanced approach to life are truly inspiring.
At just 16, Myles excels in academics, sports, and leadership roles. His journey is a testament to what can be achieved with determination, support, and structured flexibility. Myles epitomises our ethos at Education Incorporated: Being your best self.
Myles began his educational journey at Education Incorporated in Grade 4 after a teacher at his previous school recommended it. The new environment quickly became the perfect fit for him. Since then, Myles has thrived, demonstrating exceptional academic and extracurricular capabilities.
Outside school, Myles is deeply involved in archery and scouts. He also participated in the school’s robotics programme and is heavily relied upon for technical tasks, including sound engineering and email management, roles for which he receives a salary. This entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged and nurtured at Education Incorporated, helping students like Myles build a portfolio of experience for their future careers.
I sat with Myles and chatted about his busy life and how he balances everything. I was struck by his incredible wisdom despite his young age.
Archery and Achievements
Interviewer: You excel in archery. Why did you take it up, and when did you start?
Myles: I started shooting in 2019, inspired by my father and brother, who also love the sport. It’s a discipline and skill-intensive sport that I’ve grown to love, and it serves as a form of therapy for me. If I’m ever feeling overwhelmed during the week, an hour and a half of archery always helps me refocus.
Interviewer: Have you set any records?
Myles: I hold two South African records in the Junior Male Bowhunter Recurve category. One is for a single-day shoot, which I achieved at the Gauteng Championships in 2021, and the other is for a double-day nationals competition, which I secured in 2022. These records mean a lot to me, as they reflect my dedication and hard work.
Interviewer: Tell us about your involvement in Scouts and your role in the Kontiki competition.
Myles: I am part of the First Morningside Scout Group. I’ve been actively participating in the Kontiki competition for the past two years, and this year, I served as the patrol leader of the raft patrol. Kontiki is a regional event where scouts from Gauteng and other regions compete in various challenges, including building and sailing rafts. It’s an intense and exhilarating experience with minimal downtime, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.
Interviewer: What is the highlight of your scouting experience?
Myles: The leadership skills I’ve developed are invaluable. Scouting teaches you how to lead small groups and handle stressful situations. For example, we must lead our patrols in applying aid effectively in first aid simulations. These scenarios have taught me how to lead both actively and from the side, which is a crucial skill in many areas of life.
Balancing Responsibilities
Interviewer: You also achieve excellent results in all your schoolwork. What is your absolute favourite subject and why?
Myles: Maths – definitely maths. I do maths for fun sometimes because I like the puzzle aspect and the type of logical thinking it requires. So, I do really well at it too, because I enjoy it so much.
Interviewer: How do you manage to balance everything and keep sane?
Myles: It’s about planning well in advance. I start organising my next month’s schedule early, ensuring I can meet deadlines without surprises. I also ensure I get enough sleep and set aside time for myself, especially on Saturdays. Abby, my girlfriend, also helps me manage my time effectively.
Interviewer: Does the school’s trust and recognition help in managing your responsibilities?
Myles: Absolutely. Knowing that the school trusts me with significant responsibilities and recognises my efforts with a salary motivates me to maintain high standards and balance my various roles effectively.
Personal Insights and Future Plans
Interviewer: What are your future plans?
Myles: I’m considering aeronautical engineering but remain open to exploring other options as I progress. I believe in building a portfolio of experience, which is why I take on various responsibilities and roles.
Interviewer: What key lessons have you learned from your activities?
Myles: Structured flexibility is crucial. It’s important to have a schedule but also allow room for adjustments. Understanding your triggers and pre-empting anxiety through proper planning is also essential. I also believe in viewing setbacks as learning opportunities. Rather than seeing a lower mark as a failure, I use it to identify areas for improvement.
Interviewer: Do you have any hobbies that help you unwind?
Myles: Archery is a significant hobby for me, even though I compete. Additionally, I enjoy gaming, particularly games that involve creativity and strategy. They allow me to escape and build other worlds, which is both relaxing and mentally stimulating.
Interviewer: Any final thoughts or advice?
Myles: It’s important to view failures as opportunities for growth. Teachers should provide specific feedback rather than general criticisms to help students improve. Also, never underestimate the impact of lockdown on students’ social and academic development. We need to be kind to ourselves and others as we navigate these challenges. I am grateful to be in a space that supports my growth in all areas.
Myles exemplifies the balance between academics, sports, and leadership, demonstrating wisdom beyond his years. His proactive approach to time management and the support from Education Incorporated set a commendable example for peers and educators alike. We look forward to seeing Myles achieve great things in the future.
